Functional Neurological Voice Disorders

Vanessa Sciacca

Sydney Health Executive Education in partnership with Sydney Voice Lab, supported by the Dr Liang Voice Program: Functional Neurological Voice Disorders Microcredential – Issued by the University of Sydney.

This microcredential course provides practising speech-language pathologists with advanced insights into functional neurological voice disorders (FNVD).

Across nine expert-led modules, participants explore the evolution of our understanding of FNVD, delve into the latest research on the underlying mechanisms, examine its clinical manifestations, and understand the criteria for its diagnosis. The course culminates in developing practical skills essential for the effective assessment, therapy, and management of FNVD.

The course includes a mix of pre-recorded lectures, video demonstrations showcasing practical voice restoration techniques, and enriching podcast discussions, all designed to enhance both theoretical knowledge and clinical application.

Students will:

  • Describe the evolution of terminology, theories of aetiology, and diagnostic classifications for FNVD in the context of Functional Neurological disorders (FND); and apply the latest understanding to case assignments.

  • Compare the epidemiological data relating to FNVD and FND, including incidence, prevalence, and the demographic factors affecting patient populations.

  • Describe possible mechanisms and theoretical models underpinning FND and FNVD (recent neurobiological and psychological formulations).

  • Identify the 'rule-in' clinical signs and other features commonly associated with FNVD and FND, including the biological, psychological, and social predisposing vulnerabilities, precipitating mechanisms, and perpetuating issues associated with FNVD.

  • Demonstrate skills in explaining what FNVD is to a patient.

  • Devise appropriate assessment and treatment plans for given case examples, including the integration of counselling.

Completion of the microcredential requires approximately 50 hours of participant effort and involves quiz questions, written assignments, and a video submission project.

This is a continuing education course which results in certification of assessed learning that focuses on specific knowledge, skills and capabilities and verifies that the holder possesses a particular professional skill. This is not a higher education award and not a qualification recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
