Acoustic Analysis in the Assessment and Treatment of Voice Disorders

Sydney Health Executive Education in partnership with Sydney Voice Lab, supported by the Dr Liang Voice Program: Acoustic Analysis in the Assessment and Treatment of Voice Disorders Microcredential – Issued by the University of Sydney.

This microcredential course provides practising speech-language pathologists, ENT specialists, and voice researchers with advanced insights and practical skills in acoustic analysis.

Across nine expert-led modules, participants explore sound physics, spectrogram analysis, and digital sound recording, along with the appropriate software for acoustic measurements. The course culminates in the development of practical skills essential for the effective analysis of pitch, loudness, and voice quality. Participants also learn how to interpret these analyses through various case activities.

The course includes a mix of pre-recorded lectures, guided online support, and real-world case studies, all designed to enhance both theoretical knowledge and clinical application.

Students will:

  • Explain the basics of sound production, its measurement, and when and why acoustic analysis is used in clinical practice.

  • Identify which programs are appropriate for which acoustic measures and factors that affect the choice of equipment, software, and recording environment.

  • Demonstrate skills in selecting the appropriate voice sample for the appropriate vocal measure (voice quality, loudness, pitch) using appropriate PRAAT settings.

  • Analyse voice samples and interpret the acoustic values measured with respect to specific patient contexts.

Completion of the microcredential requires approximately 20 hours of participant effort and involves quiz questions and case study assignments.

This is a continuing education course which results in certification of assessed learning that focuses on specific knowledge, skills and capabilities and verifies that the holder possesses a particular professional skill. This is not a higher education award and not a qualification recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
